BASILICA OF ST. JOHN

The Basilica of St. John was constructed in the name of St John and holds his tomb.  Originally constructed in the 5th century, it was devastated during an earthquake and was reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the shape of a cross.

Sitting just below the Citadel
The Ichthys symol, an 8 spoked wheel, was drawn as Greek letters "IXOYE", translated in English - Jesus, Christ, God, Son, Savior.  It was a secret symbol used by Christians to identify other Christians and Christian meeting places when the Christians were being persecuted.  During the 1st C the wheel was transformed into the now familiar "fish" symbol.  In time the symbol faded away, but was reintroduced by some students at the University of Sydney, Australia in 1965.
