IN SEARCH OF ST. NICHOLAS

Sadly, we said goodbye to our little piece of paradise in Adrasan and headed out for more discoveries...more views of the Med....a castle, but when we wound our way up to it, we all agreed it looked better from afar as it was just what you see, a shell.

St. Nicholas, the 4th C Bishop of Myra, famed for generosity and piety, was beatified;he became the patron of fishermen and children, and the town became a place for pilgrimage. This particular statue was donated to the town of Demre (modern Myra) by the Russian Orthodox Church; St. Nicholas is the main saint in Russia and the town has much Russian influence.

Long concealed frescoes are being slowly brushed back to life.
Intricate mosaic floors
Arches, arches, arches

This had been St. Nicholas's tomb, until 1087 when a group of Italians stole his myrrh-impregnated bones and took them to Bari Italy.  Today, the Turks are negotiating to have the remains returned...so far, no luck.
